Information About Arezzo

Arezzo lies at the convergence of the valleys of the Valdarno, Casentino and Valdichiana, and was once an important Etruscan town, later absorbed into the Roman empire. It was one of the richest Etruscan towns and today has one of the biggest jewellery industries in Europe, as well as its famous monthly antiques fair.

The sloping Piazza Grande lies within the mediaeval centre and is lined at one end by the porticoes of the Palazzo delle Logge Vasariane (1573), a work of the famous local architect Giorgio Vasari. On the first Sunday of each month, the piazza and its surrounding streets are transformed into the most important antiques fair in Italy, well worth a visit but if you can’t make it, there are many antiques shops around the town centre full of interesting and unusual artefacts.

Other landmarks worth visiting are;

The Chiesa di San Francesco
This 14th century church houses one of the greatest works of Italian art, Piero della Francesca’s ‘Legend of the True Cross’ (1452 -56) which depicts Christ’s death in 10 episodes. The work was badly damaged by damp and has been undergoing restoration for many years.

Pieve di Santa Maria
This 12th century church has a stunning Romanesque façade with each column of a different design, and an unusual 14th century bell-tower with 40 windows, which is one of the city’s emblems.

The Duomo
Began in 13th century and completed in the 15th, the Duomo houses several works of art including a fresco of Mary Magdalene by Piero della Francesca.

Chiesa di San Domenico
This church contains a crucifix painted by Cimabue. On nearby Via XX Settembre, ‘Casa di Vasari’ was built and decorated by the famous architect Giorgio Vasari himself.

Museo Statale d’Arte Medioevale e Moderna
Is a museum with work by local artists including Luca Signorelli and Vasari and other artists from the 13th to the 18th centuries.
