Information About Lago di Vagli
Northwest of Castelnuovo you can take the road up to the Lago di Vagli (Vagli Lake), a beautiful tranquil area.
The lake is actually a hydroelectric basin of which the construction in the forties meant the village of Fabbriche di Careggine was completely submerged. At low levels, the church tower can just be seen sticking out of the water.
Once every ten years the lake is emptied for maintenance work to be carried out, and the phantom village is again slowly revealed to the hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world who are spellbound by the emergence of its ghostly ruins.
The area is very popular with walkers and hikers and boats can also be hired to take out on the lake.
