SWIMMING POOLS

A standard, rectangular swimming pool 10m x 5m constructed in the ground with reinforced concrete will cost you in the region of 30,000 euros, complete with skimmers, filtration system, small paving area made of local stone around it.

Buying a prefabricated fibre-glass pool and having it buried, will not save you much, as the cost of transporting it is often high, not to mention impossible in many areas of Tuscany with narrow roads etc and the work required to bury and support it as well as the accessories necessary makes the price more or less the same as a properly built pool. It also won't last as long and there are even some concerns about effects on health some fibre-glass pools have.

The following will add to the cost;

- Having a 'cascade' - as the water must be collected in a tank buried below where the cascade falls and pumped back up

- Having a large surround of stone, paving or decking around the pool

- Having an unusual shape

- If the ground is rocky, the cost of digging will be substantially increased

- Having a large or deep pool - more water requires a increase in filtration system size.

- if a retaining wall is required because the pool will be on a slope.

There are two types of filtration system - either skimmers built into the walls, which suck the water out back into the pool, or grills around the pool which the water enters and is then pumped back into the pool.

You need permission to install a pool. A geologist must first check the ground is suitable, then permission must be sought from the council. You should not have a problem getting permission unless your property is within the designated historic centre of a town or village, or you have close neighbours who may object. The planning regulations of each area vary and some are more flexible on pools than others so it's worth checking first with your agent or council (comune) that a pool will be possible.

In addition to the cost of building the pool, you will need to pay the geologist and geometra and the planning fees to the council.
