Located on a hill on the northern slope of Mount Amiata, it includes the medieval towns of Rocca d’Orcia, Campiglia d’Orcia, Vivo d’Orcia and Ripa d’Orcia as well as the spa town of Bagni San Filippo.
The medieval village is characterized by small, steep alleys; it has a 17th-century square and the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Maddalena.
Castiglione d’Orcia still has the image it had in the Middle Ages, especially in the center of the Borgo and the walls that surrounded it.
All that remains of Antiquity is an arched stone gate, the only one of the four ancient gates that still existed in the 18th century.
